Commitment

-by Andrew Romanoff

For as long as I can remember, my family has shared a commitment to public service.

My father's parents owned a small grocery store in Schenectady, New York; they lived in an apartment above it.  They helped many of their customers -- fellow immigrants -- endure the war years, offering them food on credit and forgiving the loans.

My mother was a social worker.  Her father traveled around the world with Project Hope, bringing medical supplies to children in Africa, Latin America and southeast Asia.

Thanks to my family, my sister and I never had to worry about what would happen when we got sick, or whether we'd have a place to sleep at night.  We took our good fortune for granted.  Plenty of children, in the U.S. and abroad, cannot.

I went to work for the Southern Poverty Law Center, and in the villages of Central America, and in the Colorado House of Representatives, for the same fundamental reason: because I want to make it possible for every child to fulfill his or her potential.  That's why I'm running for the U.S. Senate.

I've listened to thousands of Coloradans over the course of this campaign.  Many of the families I've met have lost their jobs, their homes, their savings.  Just as troubling, they're losing their faith in our political system -- and in Washington's willingness to do something about the problems that afflict their lives.  They see senators seduced by special interests, and they wonder, as one man in Commerce City asked me, who's looking out for the rest of us.

I will fight as hard as I possibly can to repair this broken system, and to end the pay-to-play culture that has turned Congress into a subsidiary of the industries it's supposed to be regulating.  When I get to Washington, I will never forget who sent me there.  I will owe my seat to you.

I'm asking for your vote, and I'm asking you to contribute to our campaign.  Together, we can restore a government "of the people, by the people, for the people."

Sincerely,

Andrew Romanoff
