Senate Candidate Proposes Lifting Cap on Corporate Liability

U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff called on Congress to force oil spillers like British Petroleum, Anadarko and Mitsui to pay for the damages they caused in the Gulf of Mexico, by lifting the cap that limits corporate liability to $75 million.

“We are facing one of the worst economic and environmental disasters in American history,” Romanoff said. “The companies responsible for this catastrophe – not the taxpayers who suffer from it – should foot the bill.”

Derivatives Vote – Latest Chance to Choose Sides

Facing an imminent vote on the regulation of derivatives, Senators must weigh their allegiance to Wall Street against the interests of their constituents.  These highly leveraged deals are done in private, making it impossible to limit the predatory behavior of the banks. Andrew Romanoff has repeatedly called for derivatives to be traded on an open exchange to ensure transparency. His primary opponent has not.

Sen. Bennet votes to keep banks “too big to fail”

Sen. Bennet votes to keep banks “too big to fail”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | MAY 7, 2010 | ROMANOFF FOR COLORADO

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet has voted against the Brown-Kaufman amendment which would cap the size and power of “too big to fail” megabanks largely responsible for the financial meltdown.

As an amendment to the financial reform bill, Brown-Kaufman would force the nation’s six largest banks (Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley – all contributors to Sen. Bennet) to dramatically downsize, limiting their self-serving powers, their sway over world markets, and their ability to leverage - all which will lessen risk and volatility as a whole. Read More

Rasmussen Poll: Romanoff gains on Norton;
Bennet loses ground despite million-dollar ad buy

The findings in Rasmussen Reports’ May 3rd survey of Colorado general election voters breaks the back of the cynical, but fading assumption that this U.S. Senate seat can be purchased. After spending more than a million dollars on a statewide television buy, Michael Bennet has lost ground on Jane Norton while, Andrew Romanoff has cut her lead by more than a third. In matchups against Ken Buck, the identical trend continues. As well, Romanoff boasts the highest favorable ratings in the race with significant potential to go higher, while Bennet, who has the highest unfavorables, has a limited universe to sway otherwise.

Romanoff Renews Call for Audit of the Federal Reserve

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | MAY 5, 2010 | ROMANOFF FOR COLORADO

U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff today renewed his call for an independent audit of the Federal Reserve. His Democratic opponent voted against this proposal last year.

“A bipartisan majority of the House voted to require the General Accounting Office to audit the Federal Reserve,” Romanoff said. “This week, the Senate has a chance to do the same. I support this step.” Romanoff underlined the case he first made in March. “The Federal Reserve’s regulatory power stretches from Wall Street to Main Street,” he said. “Indeed, the effects of the Fed’s decisions ripple across the globe.” Read More

Romanoff calls for comprehensive immigration reform

Romanoff calls for comprehensive immigration reform

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | APR. 27, 2010 | ROMANOFF FOR COLORADO

U.S. Senate Candidate Andrew Romanoff today issued the following statement:

The passage of Senate Bill 1070 marks a terrifying turn of events, not only for Arizona but for the United States as a whole. Anyone who lives in or visits Arizona may now be stopped if a law-enforcement official has "reasonable suspicion" to believe that he or she is unlawfully present.

As the son and grandson of immigrants -- and as an American -- I am outraged by this decision. Arizona's new law invites racial profiling and puts police officers themselves in an impossible position, by requiring them, in effect, to violate the rights of citizens they are sworn to protect.

This law is unwise, unsafe and unconstitutional. Indeed, it is un-American.

Romanoff on Goldman Sachs: An indicted firm is no place to turn for campaign contributions
Calls on Sen. Bennet to return funds

The Securities and Exchange Commission last week took the first step toward cleaning up Wall Street.  It's time to do the same in Washington.

As Goldman Sachs received billions in taxpayer-funded bailouts, it was simultaneously betting against the American people. Goldmanplayed both sides of the housing market, selling mortgage-backed securities designed to fail — and then profiting from their failure.  The SEC finally summoned the courage to call Goldman's double-dealing by its proper name: fraud.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | APR. 4, 2010 | ROMANOFF FOR COLORADO

The campaign of U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff said today he would win a spot on the primary ballot by earning support from assembly delegates, despite the opposition's decision to dismiss such voters as unrepresentative of Colorado Democrats.

Locals add own flavor to Clear Creek assembly

04/02/2010 - The Colorado Statesman - Ernest Luning - Like many of the Democrats gathered at the Clear Creek County assembly in Idaho Springs last weekend, Randy Wheelock has worn a lot of hats over the years. A past member of the school board and former city councilman, Wheelock used to co-chair the county Democratic Party along with his wife, Eileen, and this year he’s running the party’s get-out-the-vote operation in the mountain county west of Denver. So when he rose to urge delegates to support former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet in a primary, Wheelock didn’t have to read from a brochure.

Will Romanoff’s Move Put the Public Option Back On the Table?

Will Romanoff’s Move Put the Public Option Back On the Table?

03/19/2010 - David Sirota - The big news this afternoon was Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) abandoning his previous promise to offer an amendment to the Senate health care bill adding a public option into the bill. This amendment would need only 51 votes, as the public option reduces the deficit (by a lot) and therefore is in order for reconciliation. Sanders announcement that he is backing down to the Senate Democratic leadership and White House aides who cut a deal with hospital/drug lobbyists to kill the public option seemed to suggest the public option is dead. That is, until Colorado Senate Democratic candidate Andrew Romanoff tonight just issued a statement that will put significant pressure on his primary opponent, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), to offer the amendment instead: Read More
