Romanoff: Making It Harder to Apply for Asylum Is Un-American

AURORA, CO— US Senate Candidate Andrew Romanoff today released the following statement after the Trump Administration proposed placing new restrictions on asylum seekers:

“Our nation has a long and proud tradition of welcoming refugees. Making it harder to apply for asylum is at odds with our heritage and our values.

“Coloradans deserve a senator who will stand up to President Trump and defend those values. That means not only ensuring access for asylum seekers but also enacting comprehensive immigration reform.

“For me, this fight is personal. I would not be in the United States if our country had not opened its doors to my mother and all four of my grandparents. I will do everything to preserve that opportunity for generations to come.”

The Trump Administration recently released a memo instructing the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice to place new restrictions on asylum seekers at the Mexican border. In the memo, administration officials were asked to craft new regulations in 90 days that would charge asylum seekers fees to process their asylum applications and deny work permits until their claims are adjudicated.
